A complete array of wellness services are available to keep your horse in top shape, whatever his or her athletic skill or job. When you schedule a physical exam a veterinarian will check the vital parameters of your horse including heart and respiratory rates, temperature, basic condition of the horse including weight, and soundness exam with flexion tests.

vaccine program will be designed based on your horse’s needs and following the American Association of Equine Practitioners guidelines. An effective deworming program is determined incorporating proper rotation of dewormers and the most effective timing. Veterinarians can also help plan a nutrition program based on the health needs of the horse in consideration with the quality of feed and hay available to you. If scheduled ahead of time, our veterinarians can perform routine dental care on your horse including power float or traditional hand floats to remove sharp edges on the teeth and uncover possible dental problems.

Geriatrics

In the 1980’s, the average age of athletic horses treated were 6 or 7 years old. However, today the average age of competition horses treated at the Cleveland Equine Clinic is around 10-15 years of age. Some are living well into their thirties and even forties. Due to significant advances in equine health care and diagnostics, horses are living longer, and as they do, they require care unique to the older horse. With preventative medicine and meticulous care from their owners, horses are competing later in life. Not only are horses living longer, but their quality of life has improved.

Our veterinarians offer complete preventative care programs including maintenance and diagnostic services designed for the welfare of the aging horse. Early detection and implementation of a medical management program are key to monitoring the aging process in horses. Early diagnosis of subtle changes begins with a base line measurement for future comparisons, which later helps extend the health of your horse.

Geriatric services include:

  • Wellness exams
  • Individual vaccination & deworming programs
  • Individual evaluation of body condition & nutrition
  • Dental Care
  • Individual medical therapy to meet the changing needs of the aging horse
  • Blood work to include CBC and chemistry profile, blood insulin and glucose
  • Laminitis evaluation
  • Cushings Disease testing

Preventative & Early Detection Screening Plans

CEC is dedicated to providing optimal care for all our equine patients. As a step to ensuring the best quality of life for your horse it is important to detect medical conditions at the earliest onset. In many cases proactive prevention may keep your horse healthy for several years. Some of the medical conditions that cause pain, illness and even death can be prevented or identified early in the course of the disease. These conditions include but are not limited to laminitis (founder), equine cushings disease (PPID), equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), and insulin resistance (IR)/ insulin disfunction (ID). The veterinarians at CEC are recommending annual screening diagnostics to identify these conditions as early as possible. In doing so we hope to minimize the devastating effects of the diseases.
