Opportunities

Cleveland Equine is proud to offer a student shadowing program. This program is designed for any student interested in expanding their exposure to the world of equine veterinary medicine. Student shadows will have potential exposure to all aspects of our practice including sports medicine, reproduction, internal medicine, acupuncture, dentistry, and more. This is a great opportunity to gain practical experience and complete any personal goals a student may have. During your time, we will try to place you in areas of interest. This opportunity is open to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. This is our most flexible program as students have the ability to choose how long they would like to shadow maxing out at two weeks unless approved otherwise. Hours differ between veterinarians; shadows will have a set start time for each day but the end time can vary based upon the time of year, the veterinarian’s schedule, and any added emergency calls.

Thank you for your interest in Cleveland Equine Clinic’s shadow program.

Cleveland Equine Clinic (CEC) has recently begun a veterinary internship program established in 2019. CEC is a full-service ambulatory practice with a fully equipped clinic for outpatient procedures, elective surgeries, and hospitalizations. Our goal is to assist recent graduates in creating a solid skill set, problem solving, and overall a foundation to enter the field of equine veterinary medicine. Our internship is designed to expose the intern to a large and diversified caseload. The Cleveland Equine team currently consists of nine veterinarians with a array of special interests to provide the utmost in quality care and treatment. CEC has always been committed to being at the forefront of equine care. At CEC, we utilize diagnostics modalities such as ultrasound, digital radiography, standing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endoscopy, gastroscopy, In house bloodwork, as well as computed gait analysis. Innovative treatment options such as platelet rich plasma (PRP), interleukin receptor antagonistic protein (IRAP), stem cell, and shockwave are all offered by CEC as well.

What Interns Do…

Interns will spend approximately 6 weeks on rotation with each of our clinicians both in clinic and ambulatory setting. This allows the intern to become familiar with the area, clientele, and practice values. The veterinarians will mentor the intern throughout their stay. Once the introductory period is over, interns will be expected to start to take primary emergency duty and solo appointments (with guidance from the other veterinarians) when ready, dependent on skillset and confidence. Interns will be supplied with their own practice vehicle, supplies, and equipment. Interns are expected to be heavily involved with our emergency service and should plan to have at least 2 nights a week on call and 3 weekends a month on call. The intern will also be responsible for all hospitalized patients.

Benefits…

Internships are salaried positions with benefits including health insurance, professional liability insurance, and four days paid vacation. Cleveland Equine will also cover Ohio Veterinary licensing expense. Housing is provided and located on premises. House is fully furnished and includes two bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry. The house has three bedrooms and will be periodically shared with other interns/externs. Housing is co-ed.

Internships begin tentatively on June 1 each year and are a 12- month position. Application deadline is January 5th and notification of acceptance is by February 1st.

Prerequisite Application Process: DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited veterinary school, passing score on NAVLE, CV, 3 letters of recommendations, and letter of intent. Preference is given to previous externs.

Cleveland Equine Clinic (CEC) offers to veterinary students an externship program to satisfy the externship requirements for their degree. Externs have the opportunity to observe the veterinarians in internal medicine, sports medicine, standing MRI, elective surgeries, reproduction, dentistry, and emergency services among many others. CEC attempts to facilitate as many hands-on opportunities for learning as possible. Externs will be included in the daily routine of all veterinarians. Externs are also expected to be available evenings and weekends during their stay.

Housing on the premises is also provided at no cost to the student. However, housing is limited. We have bedrooms with provided bedding, two bathrooms and a fully functional kitchen. Potential interns are strongly encouraged to participate in our externship program prior to applying for an internship.
